HEAVY rain and strong winds downed trees and powerlines throughout Bendigo as thunderstorms concluded a scorching day of total fire ban.

At least five trees fell on busy city roads as storms hit about 7.45 pm, some bringing down powerlines and cutting electricity to 1620 homes in Bendigo, White Hills and Epsom.

In Golden Square, one tree fell into a front yard near the corner of Vine and McKenzie Streets, damaging property.

State Emergency Service senior emergency management officer Dan Hendy said about 20 SES officers were involved in three crews called to help out.

"We had about 35 jobs reported, of which half a dozen were trees on houses and the rest were trees and powerlines on driveways or roads," he said.

Police and emergency crews were called to remove debris blocking traffic in Strickland Road, McCrae Street, Napier Street, Mundy Street and Rohan Street.

Traffic lights were also out in much of the city.

In some streets, passing truck drivers helped clear away trees.

Powercor spokesman Andrew Bartram said the storm, which was concentrated over Bendigo, cut power to several suburbs about 8.20 pm.

He said many individual customers had contacted Powercor after isolated powerlines also fallen, with extra crews working into the night to restore systems as quickly as possible.

Firefighters attending an electrical fault at Beck Legal in Pall Mall were called to help clear fallen trees and powerlines in other parts of the city after the storm hit.

The heavy squalls had disappeared off the radar by 9 pm, leaving emergency crews to mop up the aftermath.
